With the Canadian Governments' introduction of Excise Stamps to Vaping, the cost of all Vaping Products containing e-liquid will be going up. This includes Disposables, Pre-filled Pods and all Bottles of E-liquid — regardless of the amount, type or presence of Nicotine.
The cost of the Excise Tax will vary from product to product, and will be determined by the following:
Unfortunately for consumers, Excise Taxes are absorbed into the product cost and aren't simply added as an additional Tax.
While 2mL Disposables and packs of 3x 2mL Pods will only be going up $1 and $3 dollars respectively, the Excise Tax will also be Sales Taxed. That Sales Tax is already at 26% in British Columbia (5% GST and 20% PST on the subtotal including GST).
For those still managing to follow, some Vapers will be getting triple Taxed. A 30mL bottle that costs $15 before Excise and Sales Tax will now cost almost double after Taxes in British Columbia, with roughly 45% going to the Canadian Government.
The Sales Tax will vary across the country depending on the Province or Territories' use of GST, PST or HST. With their currently implemented Vaping Taxes, Vapers in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador will be hit the hardest. Vapers in Alberta and Prince Edward Island should also be prepared for similar Vaping Taxes in the near future.
Starting October 1st, 2022, any Vaping Products containing e-liquid that are being manufactured or imported for sale in Canada, must be Excise Duty Stamped. Any Vaping Products containing e-liquid that were manufactured or imported before October 1st, must be sold or Excise Duty Stamped by January 1st, 2023.
Nothing ever gets cheaper in life, especially when the Government gets involved.
A 30mL bottle will be Excise Taxed $7, and a 120mL will be Excise taxed $16. While most of Canada can still get larger E-liquid bottles, Vapers in British Columbia were already outraged when legislation limited E-liquid bottles to maximum 30mL. Now not only can they not take advantage of the lower per/mL price of larger bottles, they will now be Excise Taxed $28 on the equivalent of 120mL of E-liquid instead of $16.
Stock up... Especially if you are in a Province with a Vaping Tax already implemented. There may be some discounted prices as the end of the year draws closer, but there is no guarantee of having specific products in stock without the Excise Duty Stamp applied. Products with Excise Stamps Applied will be for sale in stores as soon as early October...
All current Non-Excise Duty Stamped products will be sold on a first come first served basis.
